Forensic Mechanical Engineer (HVAC/MEP)

Location: Remote from a home office within the United States, in any major U.S. market. Fieldwork in confined spaces and at heights is required, along with local, regional, and national travel, including some overnight trips.

Salary: $100,000–$180,000 per year, plus potential nondiscretionary compensation based on billable productivity.

What you will do

• Investigate and evaluate the root causes and extent of failures and damage in HVAC and MEP systems.
• Assess failures involving building management and automation systems, fire protection, and fire alarm systems.
• Perform fieldwork, inspect equipment and sites, and operate required technical equipment.
• Prepare effective technical reports with clear and defensible conclusions.
• Provide expert witness services and communicate findings in face-to-face client interactions.
• Work independently and collaborate with cross-functional engineering experts.

Requirements

• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship or restrictions.
• Professional Engineer license in the state of residence or eligibility by reciprocity is required.
• 5–10 years of experience designing or working with mechanical equipment and systems, including HVAC and MEP systems.
• At least a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
• Strong technical writing, verbal communication, client service, computer, and industry software skills.
• Ability to perform fieldwork in confined spaces and at heights, carry ladders, and travel as needed.

Nice to have

• At least five years of forensic engineering experience.
• Additional active Professional Engineer licenses in surrounding states.
• CFI (IAAI) and/or CFEI (NAFI) certification.
• Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Expert witness experience.
