TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer (Robotics) (3D safety sensors): Owning the mechanical design, prototyping, sourcing, assembly, and production scale-up of a 3D safety sensor for industrial robots with an accent on CAD, hands-on fabrication, rapid prototyping, and repeatable builds. Focus on designing optical assemblies and enclosures, creating test fixtures, solving tolerance and DFM challenges, and supporting laser eye-safety certification.

Location: On-site in Point Breeze, Pittsburgh, PA, United States

Company

Develops a 3D safety sensor for industrial robots that monitors programmable protection zones and connects to customer safety controllers.

What you will do

  • Own the master CAD assembly, including optical and illumination modules, mounting and alignment systems, and the enclosure.
  • Build units, source components, and create written procedures for repeatable assembly.
  • Manage vendors and BOM details, including suppliers, part numbers, lead times, and costs.
  • Design and produce quick-turn test fixtures for bench validation.
  • Apply tolerance analysis and design-for-manufacturing principles as production volumes increase.
  • Support laser eye-safety and formal third-party safety qualification testing.

Requirements

  • On-site availability in Pittsburgh is required; the role does not support remote work.
  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, graduating in December 2026 or recently graduated.
  • Co-op or internship experience in a real engineering organization.
  • Fluency in CAD, such as SolidWorks, Fusion, Onshape, or NX.
  • Hands-on experience with machining, fabrication, assembly, wiring, and fitting parts to meaningful tolerances.
  • Experience building a moving system with motors and sensors, such as a robot, drone, combat bot, AUV, printer, CNC machine, FSAE/Baja vehicle, or mechatronics project.

Nice to have

  • Optics or photonics coursework.
  • GD&T and tolerance stack-up experience.
  • Design-for-manufacturing experience.
  • Robotics background.

Culture & Benefits

  • Small, cross-functional team working closely with firmware and software engineers.
  • Fast hands-on development cycle, including designing, printing, testing, and iterating physical parts.
  • Broad scope with significant ownership and direction-setting responsibility.
  • Structured documentation, design rationale, written procedures, and traceable requirements for safety certification.
  • Competitive salary, company equity, employer health coverage contribution, paid time off, holidays, and a year-end office closure.

Hiring process

  • Submit a résumé and evidence of something built, such as photos, CAD screenshots, a PDF, or a video.
  • Include two sentences explaining what the project does and what was difficult about it.
