Senior NPI Mechanical Engineer (Robotics)

Location: Boston, Massachusetts, US; on-site

Salary: $150,000–$190,000 USD per year

What you will do

• Lead mechanical NPI activities from concept and prototyping through pilot builds, production ramp, and sustained production.
• Review designs for manufacturability, assembly, and testability using DFM, DFA, and DFT principles.
• Establish NPI gate processes and own build plans, test protocols, and readiness criteria.
• Select manufacturing processes, tooling, and fixturing while developing assembly processes, work instructions, and line layouts.
• Lead defect triage, containment, root-cause analysis, CAPA, and foundational quality metric tracking.
• Source, qualify, audit, and manage suppliers and contract manufacturers for mechanical components, subassemblies, and tooling.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• 10+ years of mechanical engineering experience, including significant NPI experience.
• Experience taking products from concept through mass production, preferably in robotics, consumer electronics, or complex electromechanical systems.
• Strong knowledge of DFM/DFA/DFT, GD&T, injection molding, sheet metal, machining, and casting.
• Hands-on experience with FMEA, 8D, root-cause analysis, SPC, supplier management, and manufacturing-line development.
• Willingness to travel to domestic and international supplier and manufacturing sites as needed.

Nice to have

• Experience in robotics, automation, or complex mechatronic products.
• Familiarity with PLM/ERP systems and NPI program management tools.
• Six Sigma or equivalent quality certification.
• Experience with robotics hardware regulatory and safety requirements, including UL, CE, or ISO.
