Mechanical Engineer (AI)

Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States; the role supports deployment across multiple collection sites.

Salary: $173,000–$245,000 per year, plus bonus, equity, and benefits.

Build hardware and software for immersive augmented and virtual reality experiences, including data collection systems supporting Codec Avatars, Input, and Health programs.

What you will do

• Own the mechanical architecture and design of headsets, wearable prototypes, fixtures, and supporting data collection infrastructure.
• Integrate cameras, IMUs, audio, illumination, electronics, and data aggregation into wearable form factors while maintaining alignment, comfort, thermal performance, and participant safety.
• Translate research roadmaps into requirements, specifications, test plans, and documented design decisions.
• Lead prototyping, fabrication, assembly, validation, root-cause analysis, and deployment of repeatable devices across collection sites.
• Coordinate with electrical, firmware, systems, research, program management, operations, manufacturing, and supply-chain partners.
• Establish reusable mechanical platforms, standards, procedures, and documentation for future device builds.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
• 8+ years of experience designing and developing electromechanical products or devices.
• Experience with 3D CAD, including Siemens NX or SOLIDWORKS, and ownership of designs from concept through production or deployment.
• Experience integrating cameras, sensors, electronics, or compute into constrained form factors, including precision alignment and tolerance stack-up analysis.
• Experience designing and executing mechanical tests, fixtures, measurements, and data analysis.
• Knowledge of CNC machining, injection molding, sheet metal, additive manufacturing, design for manufacturing, and cross-functional hardware development.

Nice to have

• Experience with AR/VR headsets, smart glasses, wearable devices, motion capture, photogrammetry, or biometric sensing.
• Experience with systems engineering, FMEA, risk analysis, structural and thermal analysis, and FEA correlation.
• Python or equivalent scripting for test automation and data collection.
• Experience with human-subject studies, participant safety, privacy, data compliance, and research operations.
• Experience leading novel technology through production transfer and working with contract manufacturers.
