TL;DR
Senior Turbomachinery Design Engineer (Nuclear Reactors): Developing mechanical designs for turbomachinery components and assemblies in deployable nuclear reactor systems with an accent on CAD, engineering drawings, GD&T, materials, and manufacturability. Focus on integrating aerodynamic, structural, rotordynamics, thermal, manufacturing, and test requirements while resolving supplier and production issues.

Location: Los Angeles, United States. The role requires compliance with U.S. Government export regulations.

Salary: $140,000–$220,000 per year, depending on leveling and experience. Senior-level range: $140,000–$185,000; Staff-level range: $155,000–$220,000.

Company

hirify.global is a Series C startup developing mass-producible, inherently safe microreactors for terrestrial, underwater, and space applications.

What you will do

  • Own the mechanical design and detailed definition of turbomachinery components and assemblies.
  • Develop 3D CAD models, assemblies, layouts, and production drawings for rotating and stationary hardware.
  • Evaluate materials, manufacturing processes, interfaces, assembly methods, and design concepts.
  • Collaborate with aerodynamic, structural, rotordynamics, thermal, manufacturing, and test engineers.
  • Work with suppliers and manufacturing teams to resolve producibility, inspection, assembly, and nonconformance issues.
  • Design test hardware, tooling, fixtures, and development rigs while improving cost, lead time, part count, and manufacturing complexity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience designing complex mechanical hardware and assemblies.
  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD, engineering drawings, GD&T, and ASME Y14.5.
  • Ability to perform first-principles engineering calculations and communicate technical information clearly.
  • Experience working with manufacturing engineers, machinists, suppliers, or inspectors to resolve hardware issues.
  • Must meet U.S. Government export-control eligibility requirements: U.S. citizenship or nationality, lawful permanent residence, refugee/asylee status, or eligibility to obtain the required authorization.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience designing turbomachinery for gas turbines, turbochargers, rocket engine turbopumps, or similar high-performance applications.
  • Expert proficiency with NX and experience with ANSYS Mechanical.
  • Experience with tolerance stack-up analysis, precision rotating machinery interfaces, and manufacturing processes such as machining, EDM, brazing, welding, casting, and additive manufacturing.
  • Experience supporting suppliers through manufacturing development and production.

Culture & Benefits

  • Significant stock option package in addition to salary.
  • Work is tied to systems thinking, first-principles reasoning, and challenging conventional approaches.
  • Deep work can be performed remotely, while teams prioritize working together in person.
  • Occasional weekend or extended-hours support may be required for hardware development milestones.
  • Equal opportunity employment based on merit, competence, and qualifications.
