TL;DR
Test Hardware Design Engineer (Nuclear): Designing, integrating, and commissioning specialized testbeds, tooling, handling equipment, and mechanical systems for nuclear auxiliary systems prototypes with an accent on nuclear safety, manufacturability, and prototype testing. Focus on structural, thermal, and hydraulic calculations, CAD models, verification and validation plans, and coordinating manufacturing, integration, and testing activities.

Location: Rockville, Maryland, United States; 4 days in office; standard schedule 8:00am–5:00pm ET, Monday–Friday. Travel up to 10% as needed.

Salary: $95,000–$120,000 for Level II, $115,000–$140,000 for Level III, $140,000–$170,000 for Level IV, and $170,000–$200,000 for Level V.

What you will do

  • Design, integrate, commission, and test specialized testbeds, tooling, handling equipment, mechanical systems, assemblies, and components for nuclear prototype development.
  • Develop concepts and engineering designs for reactor structures, systems, and components, including pressure vessels, piping, reactor internals, nuclear fuel, graphite, and high-temperature materials.
  • Perform structural, thermal, hydraulic, hand, analytical, sizing, and scoping calculations to assess technical requirements and intended functions.
  • Create and maintain CAD engineering models, design documentation, technical reports, calculations, drawings, and design basis documents.
  • Coordinate design activities with engineering teams, partners, suppliers, manufacturing, integration, and testing groups.
  • Develop verification and validation plans, support tool qualification, conduct engineering reviews, and mentor junior team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least one year of hands-on experience developing and delivering hardware or manufacturing processes in a production, internship, hobby, or collegiate engineering project environment.
  • Experience designing and developing mechanical or fluid systems, assemblies, or components.
  • Proficiency with engineering hand calculations, CAD software, and product lifecycle management software.
  • Experience owning hardware development, including manufacturing and testing oversight.
  • Ability to work in the Rockville office four days per week and during standard Eastern Time business hours.

Nice to have

  • Commercial nuclear power experience and knowledge of ASME BPVC Sections III or VIII, ASME B31.1, or ASME B31.3.
  • Experience with specialized test setups, tooling, handling equipment, metrology, instrumentation, data acquisition systems, or experimental testing.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, prototype development, or R&D laboratory environments.
  • Knowledge of NRC regulations, licensing requirements, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, valves, piping, HVAC, fire suppression, graphite, or high-temperature materials.
  • Experience with vibration, shock, and modal test programs for high-reliability mechanical components.
