Conductor Trainee (Railroad)

Location: Galesburg, Illinois, United States; reporting to the designated work location is required. Frequent travel and extended stays within the designated seniority region are required, including up to 19 weeks of training in Overland Park, Kansas. Relocation assistance is not available.

Salary: Entry rate of approximately $259.65 per day; average annual salary of $70,000–$82,000.

What you will do

• Learn and support safe freight train operations through paid classroom and on-the-job training.
• Communicate and act on oral and written operating information, signals, alarms, and daily work instructions.
• Operate track switches and derails, change train routing, and verify switch alignment.
• Switch and spot railcars, determine train make-up, and inspect cars in accordance with federal regulations.
• Climb on and off equipment, manage hand brakes, connect and disconnect air hoses, and replace broken railcar knuckles.
• Monitor track and passing-train conditions, judge speed and clearance, and report safety concerns.

Requirements

• Must be able to report to the Galesburg, Illinois work location and work in the posted geographic area.
• Must be able to work in the United States without current or future BNSF sponsorship or other assistance for employment authorization.
• At least 18 years old by the start date of January 4, 2027.
• Full-time availability of at least 40 hours per week, including on-call 24/7 coverage, nights, weekends, holidays, and seasonal work.
• Ability to travel, stay in the designated seniority region, lift and carry up to 80 pounds, climb ladders, work at heights, and walk on uneven surfaces.
• Ability to read, write, speak, hear, and understand English; distinguish colors and signals; use hand tools; and follow safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment.
