Senior Backend Engineer (Ruby/Rails)

Location: Berlin, Germany; work up to 100% from home with occasional meetings and off-sites near the Berlin headquarters

Hypofriend operates an online mortgage platform that helps customers calculate affordability, find relevant properties, and process mortgage applications.

What you will do

• Build and improve customer-facing mortgage calculators and optimization engines.
• Develop reliable, secure advisor-facing back-office tools for customer communication and mortgage application processing.
• Improve resilience, observability, and security across applications and AWS infrastructure.
• Write infrastructure as code with Terraform and support CI/CD pipelines.
• Debug production incidents, participate in on-call rotations and postmortems, and perform root-cause analysis.
• Collaborate closely with backend engineers and product teams while understanding systems end to end.

Requirements

• Strong commercial experience with Ruby, including at least 4–5 years of experience; Ruby on Rails 7/8 experience is preferred.
• Experience with RSpec, object-oriented patterns, GitHub, Sentry, and Datadog.
• Hands-on production experience with Terraform and working knowledge of AWS, including ECS, Lambda, RDS, CloudFront, VPC networking, and IAM.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, observability, containerization, incident response, and on-call rotations.
• Strong PostgreSQL and RDBMS operations knowledge, including backups, performance tuning, and failover.
• Security-first mindset with familiarity with secrets management, least-privilege access, and cloud security practices.

Nice to have

• Experience with serverless Ruby or Node.js architectures.
• Familiarity with GitHub Actions and experience defining SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets.
• Scripting and automation experience with Bash or Python.
• Experience in a regulated industry such as fintech or proptech.
