Senior Search Backend Engineer (m/f/x)

Location: Hybrid, with three days per week in an office in Munich, Berlin, London, or Valencia

What you will do

• Design and implement search functionality in a PaaS ecommerce backend.
• Develop search-related libraries using Elasticsearch and MongoDB.
• Build and maintain scalable, multi-tenant search infrastructure as code on Kubernetes with Terraform.
• Test software components for usability, functionality, and performance.
• Collaborate with Product Management and DevOps on search platform development.
• Participate in on-call rotations for production systems with a globally distributed team.

Requirements

• At least five years of software engineering experience with JVM languages and server-side systems.
• Experience with search technologies, preferably Elasticsearch.
• Strong DevOps mindset and practical experience improving infrastructure.
• Knowledge of parallel and asynchronous programming, non-blocking I/O, REST APIs, and scalable architectures including sharding, replication, load balancing, and failover.
• Interest in Scala and pragmatic functional programming patterns.
• Fluent English required for work in international teams.

Nice to have

• Experience with Scala or other functional programming languages.
• Experience with scalable event-driven architectures, queues, and notification topics.
• Experience with Helm, Kubernetes, infrastructure work, or Rust.
• Curiosity about using AI tools to work more effectively.
