Staff Backend Engineer (AI), EMEA

What you will do

• Lead large, cross-cutting backend initiatives and remove systemic bottlenecks across product and infrastructure teams.
• Drive modular backend, service, data, and platform architecture, including modernization of the monolith and legacy backends.
• Define standards for APIs, contracts, schema evolution, testing, security, performance, observability, operability, and production readiness.
• Establish patterns for dependency management, data ownership, eventing, failure isolation, service maturity, Go services, and Kubernetes operations.
• Participate in on-call and incident response, using production learnings to improve architecture and operations.
• Mentor engineers, influence platform roadmaps, and lead adoption of AI-assisted and agentic engineering workflows with appropriate quality, security, and privacy guardrails.

Requirements

• Sustained technical leadership across multiple teams or a broad product area.
• Deep backend architecture and production experience with complex applications, services, platforms, APIs, data systems, or shared backend components.
• Production experience modernizing monolithic or legacy backend architecture using modular architecture approaches.
• Ability to build alignment through clear written proposals and decision records without relying on formal authority.
• Experience mentoring engineers and shaping standards through code review, documentation, and technical example.
• Production experience with AI-assisted or agentic engineering workflows.

Nice to have

• Experience with Go services and APIs at scale, Kubernetes, cloud-native operations, or Rust adoption.
• Ruby/Rails modularization and large-monolith modernization experience.
• Experience with PostgreSQL scaling, data partitioning, queues, messaging, or distributed systems.
• Background in security-sensitive products, software supply chains, SaaS, single-tenant, self-managed, or air-gapped deployments.
