Senior Backend Engineer (Ruby)

What you will do

• Develop backend features and data frameworks for safe, efficient work with data at scale across SaaS and self-managed deployments.
• Design data retention and lifecycle management frameworks, including retention enforcement, bulk data removal, and automated policy identification.
• Build shift-left guardrails, static analysis checks, and schema-change-time enforcement to prevent unsustainable data growth.
• Develop SQL traffic replay, background operations, migration testing, and other tooling for database scalability and performance.
• Collaborate with product management, UX, frontend, infrastructure, software delivery, and analytics teams.
• Review database changes, document best practices, and help developers detect and resolve data and performance issues early.

Requirements

• Professional experience with PostgreSQL in large, complex production environments.
• Experience with high availability, automatic failover, zero-downtime migrations, retention, archiving, partitioning, or lifecycle management for large or fast-growing datasets.
• Proficiency with Ruby on Rails or another Ruby framework and backend feature development.
• Strong understanding of software design, algorithms, system-level performance trade-offs, and data architecture.
• Strong written communication, asynchronous collaboration skills, and the ability to work independently in a distributed team.
• Willingness to participate in a tier 2 database on-call rotation during the applicable time zone.
