Principal Software Engineer, P1 & Engineering Strategy

Location: United States (Remote)

Salary: $198,900–$248,625 per year

What you will do

• Define and evolve P1’s architecture across real-time collaboration, content state, APIs, visual editing, publishing, integrations, and developer extension points.
• Set company-wide engineering strategy covering reliability, security, privacy, observability, API design, testing, deployment, and incident response.
• Establish production engineering standards, including SLOs, telemetry, safe migrations, failure analysis, graceful degradation, and rollback paths.
• Mentor Staff and Senior engineers through architecture reviews, design sessions, code reviews, and technical feedback.
• Build reusable engineering patterns, libraries, documentation, and paved paths while contributing hands-on code when needed.
• Partner with product, design, security, infrastructure, customers, and other stakeholders to turn ambiguous problems into phased delivery plans.

Requirements

• 14+ years of professional software engineering experience or equivalent sustained technical impact.
• Experience as a Principal Engineer, Chief Architect, or equivalent technical leader across multiple teams and products.
• Experience defining technical strategy for complex products, platforms, or distributed systems from early architecture through production operation.
• Strong systems thinking across frontend, backend, APIs, data, infrastructure, security, and operations.
• Experience with distributed, event-driven, real-time, collaborative, or stateful systems, plus production reliability and operational ownership.
• Strong API and integration design, technical writing, mentoring, and cross-functional influence skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with real-time collaboration, multiplayer systems, CRDTs, operational transformation, synchronization, or conflict resolution.
• Background in visual editors, CMS products, web publishing, developer tooling, SDKs, or plugin ecosystems.
• Experience with GCP, AWS, Cloudflare, TypeScript, Node.js, React, Next.js, multi-tenant SaaS, or zero-to-one product launches.
