Data Science Intern (AI)

Location: Moffett Field, California; work at NASA Ames Research Center

Salary: $53,800–$80,700 annually; the stated pay range is specific to Chicago, Illinois, and the final rate depends on the selected candidate’s working location and qualifications.

What you will do

• Develop a risk assessment framework using aviation safety data.
• Apply data-mining and artificial intelligence techniques to aviation accident and incident reports.
• Process Aviation Safety Reporting System and National Transportation Safety Board databases to identify safety events, contributing factors, causal relationships, and recurring patterns.
• Support an automated pipeline for extracting and organizing safety information.
• Analyze factor combinations, event frequencies, and trends across aviation safety reports.
• Translate extracted information into event likelihoods and conditional probabilities for probabilistic risk assessment models.

Requirements

• Master’s-level through early PhD academic background.
• Strong Python programming skills.
• Background in Bayesian networks, graph structures, probability, and statistics.
• Ability to work at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California.
• Part-time availability with a negotiable time commitment.

Nice to have

• Experience working with large datasets.
• Interest in data-analysis methods and fault mode and effect analysis.
• Software engineering experience with unit testing, performance profiling, optimization, and documentation.
