Linux Systems & DevOps Engineer

Location: Remote within the United States; workday must begin between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time.

Salary: $100,000–$140,000 annually.

What you will do

• Install, configure, patch, secure, monitor, and troubleshoot Linux systems supporting the USGS ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system.
• Use Ansible to automate administration, maintain standardized configurations, and support infrastructure operations.
• Configure and troubleshoot switches, routers, firewalls, routing, LAN/WAN connectivity, and telemetry-connected systems.
• Monitor servers, services, processes, networks, and resource utilization; investigate alerts and improve monitoring checks.
• Maintain scripts, software packages, relational databases, messaging infrastructure, and Git/GitLab deployment workflows.
• Support Linux hardening, vulnerability remediation, security assessments, Assessment and Authorization activities, documentation, and cross-functional reliability improvements.

Requirements

• Hands-on production Linux systems administration experience with RHEL, CentOS, Rocky Linux, or comparable enterprise distributions.
• Hands-on Ansible experience for configuring and automating Linux systems.
• Experience with networking, TCP/IP, subnetting, DNS, routing, switching, firewalls, monitoring, logging, scripting, and automation.
• Practical experience with relational databases, SQL queries, database connectivity, synchronization, and operational troubleshooting.
• Working knowledge of Linux security and hardening, including patching, access controls, host firewalls, vulnerability remediation, and secure configuration.
• Must reside and perform work within the United States and complete U.S. Government Public Trust suitability requirements, including obtaining and maintaining a PIV card.

Nice to have

• AWS, AWS CDK, infrastructure-as-code, Go, Nagios/Icinga, Prometheus, or Grafana.
• ActiveMQ, NATS, PostgreSQL, C/C++, Cisco ASA, SELinux, CI/CD, GitLab, RPM packaging, virtualization, or highly available real-time systems experience.
• Federal security assessments, NIST controls, DISA STIGs, vulnerability management, compliance reviews, or regulated-environment experience.
