Designer (Electric Utility)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia, United States. The role includes more than 10% travel, occasional overnight work at substations or power plants, overtime, call-out overtime, and shift work as required.

Salary: $54,063–$67,578 annually for Designer; $63,496–$79,369 for Designer Senior; $74,551–$93,189 for Designer Specialist; $87,633–$109,544 for Designer Principal. Compensation range: $25.99–$52.67 per hour.

What you will do

• Create, revise, and maintain engineering drawings, record drawings, maps, sketches, schematics, and facility documentation.
• Gather technical information from verbal instructions, field notes, marked drawings, vendor catalogs, technical manuals, site visits, and equipment documentation.
• Use computer-aided design software to prepare drafting work and perform required mathematical calculations.
• Coordinate work with other company organizations and incorporate vendor prints, shop drawings, and equipment operating instructions.
• Assist with training employees in basic position skills and support safety, health, ethics, and corporate compliance programs.
• Work occasionally in substations or power plants while following safety regulations and using required personal protective equipment.

Requirements

• Associate degree in applied science drafting and CAD, civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering technology, or equivalent education and experience.
• Without an associate degree: high school graduation and four years of electric utility, industrial drafting, or computer-aided drafting experience.
• Proficiency with computer-aided design software and Microsoft Office.
• Familiarity with conventional drafting symbols and methods, plus the ability to distinguish colors.
• Valid state driver's license, ability to operate a motor vehicle, and compliance with federal and state vehicle requirements.
• Availability for overtime, call-out overtime, shift work, travel exceeding 10%, and occasional overnight work at utility facilities.
