Embedded Controls Engineer (Power Conversion Systems)

Location: Los Angeles, United States. The role is subject to U.S. Government export regulations and requires U.S. citizenship or nationality, lawful permanent residency, refugee or asylee status, or eligibility to obtain the required authorizations.

Salary: $120K–$185K per year, plus stock options.

What you will do

• Own the architecture, development, validation, deployment, and long-term maintenance of the power conversion system control application.
• Develop and maintain production-scale model-based control software with MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow.
• Design and tune closed-loop controls, operating modes, sequencing, state machines, interlocks, limits, and transition logic.
• Model and analyze system stability, dynamic response, operating limits, transient behavior, and steady-state behavior.
• Develop sensor plausibility checks, diagnostics, fault responses, degraded modes, and safe-state actions.
• Run Model-in-the-Loop, Software-in-the-Loop, Hardware-in-the-Loop, bench, and system validation; deploy and troubleshoot controls on real-time PCS hardware.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, controls, computer engineering, or a related technical field.
• 3+ years of experience developing and deploying model-based embedded controls for automotive powertrains, motorsport, propulsion, aerospace, or similarly demanding real-time systems.
• Strong MATLAB and Simulink experience, including production-scale model architecture, maintenance, and model-based code-generation workflows.
• Experience taking controls from simulation through Model-in-the-Loop, Software-in-the-Loop, Hardware-in-the-Loop, or bench testing and deploying them to real-time embedded hardware.
• Experience with control theory, dynamic systems, feedback-control design, diagnostics, and state-based supervisory logic.
• Must satisfy U.S. Government export-control work authorization requirements.

Nice to have

• Experience with McLaren Applied or Motion Applied tooling, including TAG ECUs, vTAG, or ATLAS.
• Experience with Simulink Coder, Embedded Coder, Stateflow, multi-rate models, deterministic execution, task scheduling, model references, and libraries.
• Background in powertrain, hybrid, energy-management, motorsport, high-performance automotive, or aerospace controls.
• Experience with CAN, embedded communications, real-time I/O, calibration, telemetry, data logging, and test workflows.
• Experience with version control, configuration management, requirements traceability, automated testing, and disciplined embedded-software practices.
