Tribology CAE Engineer

Location: Warren, Michigan, United States; hybrid attendance required at least 3 times per week. Travel is required for less than 25% of the role. The position is subject to export controls and requires the candidate to be a U.S. Person.

What you will do

• Lead virtual analysis of lubricated, non-lubricated, and partially lubricated frictional interfaces across propulsion and electrified systems.
• Apply physics-based CAE and reduced-order models to support architecture, sizing, calibration, validation, durability, efficiency, NVH, and issue-resolution decisions.
• Define modeling approaches, assumptions, boundary conditions, material and lubricant inputs, and appropriate analysis fidelity.
• Develop coupled CFD-to-tribology and system-to-component workflows, including automation, scripting, parametric studies, and design-of-experiments activities.
• Correlate analytical predictions with rig, engine, vehicle, e-drive, teardown, field, and warranty evidence.
• Provide engineering recommendations, risk assessments, design actions, technical guidance, peer review, and mentoring across cross-functional engineering teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• At least 5 years of relevant experience in CAE, engineering analysis, product development, or validation involving lubrication, tribology, thermofluids, powertrain, or electrified propulsion systems.
• Hands-on experience applying CAE to a lubricated-contact or fluid-system domain such as bearings, piston systems, gears, pumps, turbochargers, seals, lubrication circuits, or e-drive components.
• Strong knowledge of lubrication and tribology fundamentals, including fluid-film behavior, friction, wear, contact mechanics, oil properties, heat generation, and thermal effects.
• Experience correlating simulations with test, teardown, field, or warranty data and converting findings into design recommendations.
• Must be a U.S. Person due to export control restrictions.

Nice to have

• Master’s or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Tribology, Lubrication, Applied Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Thermofluids, or a related field.
• Experience with FLARE, AVL Excite, GT-Power, Star-CCM+, ANSYS Fluent or CFX, Siemens Simcenter, Pumplinx, Abaqus, MATLAB, Python, or comparable tools.
• Experience with lubrication-system models, oil-flow and oil-gallery analysis, aeration, cavitation, lubricant transport, or CFD-to-tribology coupling.
• Experience with advanced EHL, contact mechanics, bearings, gears, turbochargers, piston assemblies, valve-train components, pumps, seals, or electrified drive units.
• Experience with CAE method development, workflow automation, high-performance computing, optimization, surrogate modeling, or engineering data visualization.
