Principal Engineer (Software Architecture and Modernization)

Location: Remote, Poland

Salary: PLN 460,000–470,000 annually

What you will do

• Lead the architecture and hands-on modernization of legacy, database-centric applications into domain-oriented software.
• Define target architectures, service and module boundaries, migration seams, compatibility strategies, and incremental implementation plans.
• Contribute directly to backend code, prototypes, refactoring, code reviews, production fixes, and framework or runtime upgrades.
• Design domain models, APIs, persistence, transactions, caching, messaging, and event-consumer patterns.
• Diagnose and resolve complex issues involving concurrency, performance, resource contention, failure propagation, and recovery.
• Partner with engineering, product, security, and data teams to turn technical strategy into working software and reusable engineering patterns.

Requirements

• Substantial experience designing, building, operating, and evolving production backend systems, APIs, and distributed applications.
• Hands-on implementation experience with backend ecosystems such as Java/Spring Boot, Golang, Node, or TypeScript.
• Strong knowledge of domain modeling, service boundaries, modular design, refactoring, integration patterns, and migration strategies.
• Experience with relational databases, SQL, messaging, event consumers, data movement, caching, and legacy data dependencies.
• Strong discipline in automated testing, code review, static analysis, dependency management, secure coding, and production validation.
• Principal-level technical leadership with the ability to communicate risk, challenge assumptions, and guide cross-team decisions without direct people management.

Nice to have

• Experience modernizing large systems, decomposing monoliths, extracting services, or establishing modular boundaries.
• Experience with Oracle, Kafka, complex data migrations, reporting dependencies, profiling, runtime instrumentation, or concurrency analysis.
• Experience using AI coding agents for codebase analysis, implementation, testing, and modernization.
