TL;DR
Turbomachinery Engineer (AI Infrastructure): Designing and building high-speed centrifugal compressor and expansion-turbine systems for gigawatt-scale AI data-center cooling with an accent on aerodynamic design, thermofluids, rotordynamics, and machine architecture. Focus on taking turbomachine stages from mean-line analysis through CFD, manufacturing, test-stand validation, and iterative performance improvement.

Location: Hybrid in Austin, TX; Los Angeles, CA; New York, NY; San Francisco, CA; or Seattle, WA

Salary: $210,000–$260,000 USD annually, plus equity

What you will do

  • Own the aerodynamic design of centrifugal compressors from mean-line and 1D analysis through CFD and released impeller, diffuser, and return-channel geometry.
  • Define machine architecture, including stage count, shaft speed, diameter, working fluid, and bearing approach.
  • Design expansion turbines that recover shaft work from high-side pressure drops.
  • Collaborate with structural and mechanical engineers on rotordynamics, magnetic-bearing integration, and shaft stress at high speeds.
  • Run machines on test stands and use measured performance maps to improve the aerodynamic design.
  • Develop thermofluids systems for AI data-center cooling at 10–30 GW scale, including compressors, chillers, heat exchangers, two-phase heat transfer, and thermal energy storage.

Requirements

  • Experience designing a radial or axial turbomachine that was built and operated.
  • Experience taking a stage from mean-line analysis through CFD and validating the results against physical performance.
  • Experience resolving rotordynamics problems on real shafts and bearings.
  • Experience making early machine-architecture decisions with incomplete data and carrying them through build and test.
  • Ability to interpret test maps and change the design based on measured performance.
  • Experience working in a rapid build-and-test engineering environment.

Nice to have

  • Experience with turbopumps, gas turbines, cryogenic turbomachinery, launch vehicles, APUs, or aero engines.
  • Experience with high-speed motor-driven compressors, magnetic bearings, hermetic or oil-free machines.
  • Experience with transcritical or supercritical working fluids, including R744 or sCO2 cycles.
  • Experience with CoolProp, REFPROP, vapor-compression machines, chillers, heat pumps, or industrial refrigeration.
