R&D PhD Summer Intern: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Data Science

Location: Mason Business and Innovation Center, United States; onsite 4–5 days per week

What you will do

• Identify life cycle inventory data gaps and document assumptions, data quality, and sources.
• Organize cosmetic-industry data from structured, unstructured, and semi-structured sources into standardized formats.
• Develop approaches for cleaning, harmonizing, versioning, and maintaining LCA data.
• Test structured data on selected Beauty Care products for scalability.
• Improve data transfer into LCA tools and recommend opportunities for future automation.
• Work with data covering formulation, raw materials, packaging, manufacturing, distribution, and consumer use.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a PhD in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, industrial ecology, sustainability science, data science, or a related field focused on LCA, environmental modeling, product sustainability, or data management.
• Understanding of LCA principles, including cradle-to-grave modeling, life cycle inventory data, and environmental impact indicators.
• Experience organizing, cleaning, and harmonizing structured and unstructured technical data.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and documentation skills.
• Available for a 12-week internship from May or early June through August 2027 and able to work onsite 4–5 days per week in Mason.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with SimaPro, GaBi, openLCA, or ecoinvent.
• Experience with Python, Databricks, SQL, or similar data-analysis tools.
• Knowledge of data quality, metadata, traceability, and version-control practices.
• Interest in consumer products, eco-design, digital sustainability, or scalable environmental assessment.
