Principal Electrical Engineer (Distributed Energy Resources & Microgrids)

Location: Davidson, North Carolina, United States. The position may be performed remotely or from a hirify.global hub location, based on business needs and candidate location.

Annual base salary: $117,673.33–$164,675.00. Incentive eligible; not eligible for sales commission.

What you will do

• Shape distributed energy, electrification, resilience, and decarbonization strategy through technical expertise and market insight.
• Develop integrated solutions combining distributed generation, solar PV, battery energy storage, microgrids, controls, and utility infrastructure.
• Lead technical development of complex DER projects for commercial, institutional, and industrial customers.
• Direct engineering analyses, system integration, code compliance, utility interconnection, and constructability reviews.
• Support customer presentations, project pursuits, execution, technical reviews, field activities, and commissioning.
• Mentor engineers and coordinate with engineering, sales, regulatory, innovation, product management, and project development teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• State-issued Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• 7+ years of progressive electrical engineering experience focused on commercial and industrial DER, microgrids, solar PV, and battery energy storage systems.
• Experience designing medium- and high-voltage systems, substations, energy storage integration, and complex power distribution infrastructure.
• Knowledge of permitting, code compliance, utility interconnection, and applicable electrical design practices.
• Experience with tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, PVcase, PVSyst, Helioscope, Energy Toolbase, HOMER, SKM, or ETAP, plus strong analytical, writing, troubleshooting, and communication skills.

Nice to have

• Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Power Systems, or a related field.
• Utility-scale renewable energy project experience and deep solar PV and energy storage design expertise.
• Experience with microgrid controls, advanced distributed energy technologies, or grid-interactive systems.
• Knowledge of NEC, NFPA, IEEE, ANSI, UL, and IEC standards.
• Experience leading geographically distributed or multidisciplinary teams and mentoring engineers.
