Software Engineer (Java/AI)

Location: Hybrid work in Columbia, Maryland or San Antonio, Texas, with 2–3 full days per week in the office. U.S. citizenship is required.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and implement complex Java software capabilities for computer-based systems.
• Build enterprise APIs, RESTful web services, and microservices-based solutions.
• Integrate AI coding agents such as Claude Code and Gemini into daily engineering workflows.
• Use autonomous agents for multi-file feature development, codebase refactoring, and automated unit and integration testing.
• Manage context across complex multi-repository architectures and audit generated code for security, performance, and architectural alignment.
• Collaborate with engineers to deliver reliable software under multiple deadlines.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of software engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• Strong Java experience with modern frameworks and libraries such as Spring and Guava.
• Experience with enterprise APIs, RESTful web services, microservices, object-oriented programming, and the agile software lifecycle.
• Experience with Linux, Git, Nexus, Maven, and configuration management tools.
• Strong testing, troubleshooting, learning, communication, and deadline-management skills.
• Must be able to work hybrid, spending an average of 2–3 days per week in the Columbia, MD or San Antonio, TX office; U.S. citizenship is required and the ability to obtain a U.S. government security clearance is necessary.

Nice to have

• Current U.S. government security clearance.
• Experience with AWS, Azure, distributed or NoSQL databases, Elasticsearch, MongoDB, Solr, scripting, or big data platforms.
• Experience with Claude Code, Gemini, or other AI-assisted engineering workflows.
• Familiarity with JIRA, Confluence, GitHub Enterprise, DoD 8140/8570 IAT Level II certifications, or related compliance requirements.
