Electro-Optic Link Hardware Engineer (Photonics)

Location: Boston, MA or Mountain View, CA; flexible hybrid workplace model

Salary: $140,000–$170,000 USD base salary, plus equity and other rewards.

What you will do

• Run laboratory characterization and debug of high-speed electrical and optical hardware.
• Measure eye diagrams, BER, jitter, equalization, and channel impairments across process, voltage, and temperature conditions.
• Build and correlate electrical, optical, and electro-optic channel models with bench measurements.
• Validate link budgets and identify gaps between models and silicon.
• Support silicon bring-up and root-cause debugging with analog, package, PCB, and SerDes teams.
• Develop instrument-control automation, data pipelines, analysis scripts, and reproducible measurement documentation.

Requirements

• PhD in electrical engineering, photonics, or physics, or an MS with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
• Hands-on experience characterizing and debugging 56G/112G+ high-speed serial links.
• Working knowledge of SerDes equalization, including CTLE, FFE, and DFE, and signal integrity fundamentals such as S-parameters, insertion loss, return loss, and crosstalk.
• Strong laboratory skills with VNAs, real-time and sampling oscilloscopes, BERTs, and TDRs.
• Ability to build measurement setups from scratch, assess measurement validity, and close out bench debug investigations.
• Proficiency in Python or MATLAB for instrument automation and data analysis.

Nice to have

• Silicon photonics or electro-optic link experience, including modulators, photodetectors, or optical testing.
• Experience with ADS, HFSS, or similar simulation tools.
• Familiarity with COM/IBIS-AMI.
• Package or PCB channel measurement and de-embedding experience.
