Optical Engineer - 971 (Quantum Computing): Building and optimizing metrology systems for metasurface, micro-optical, and integrated photonic components that support trapped-ion quantum computers with an accent on optical testing, alignment, and high-sensitivity measurement. Focus on developing validation systems, controlling hardware with Python, and troubleshooting optical and photonic systems in laboratory and production environments.

Location: On-site in Broomfield, Colorado, United States. Candidates must be U.S. Persons: U.S. citizens, permanent residents or green card holders, or workers granted asylum or refugee status. Candidates must not be nationals of China or Russia unless also U.S. citizens.

Salary: $102,000–$128,000 annually

What you will do

  • Build and optimize metrology systems for metasurface, micro-optical, and integrated photonic components.
  • Develop high-sensitivity measurement techniques for evaluating optical and photonic device output.
  • Design systems that validate technologies, alignment methods, suppliers, and production approaches.
  • Collaborate with optical engineers, physicists, and opto-mechanical engineers on trapped-ion quantum computing systems.
  • Document and communicate procedures, results, and conclusions to collaborators and stakeholders.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 2 years of experience testing and aligning optical components and systems.
  • At least 2 years of experience building, aligning, debugging, and troubleshooting free-space optical, micro-optical, or photonic systems.
  • At least 1 year of experience using Python or a related programming language for hardware control, data acquisition, and analysis.
  • Must meet U.S. Person and national security eligibility requirements.
  • Experience in laboratory, production, or cleanroom environments with cleanliness and ESD awareness.

Nice to have

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in optics, applied physics, electrical engineering, physical science, or instrumentation.
  • Experience with diffractive optics, metasurfaces, photonics metrology, lasers, optical modeling, CAD, optical test equipment, fiber systems, cameras, or precision opto-mechanical assembly.
  • Experience translating optical designs and specifications into alignment, testing, and verification setups.
  • Experience collaborating across disciplines and learning new technical areas.
