Software Engineer - Java Development

Location: Lynchburg, Virginia; Richmond, Virginia; or remote within Eastern and Central time zones. Hybrid office attendance is required for employees living within 50 miles of the Richmond or Lynchburg offices, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, during core hours of 9am–5pm EST.

Salary: $77,800–$117,000 national annual base salary, plus eligibility for a performance-based bonus incentive.

What you will do

• Design, develop, test, maintain, and support Java-based applications and services.
• Build and maintain RESTful APIs, microservices, integrations, and scalable software solutions from business requirements.
• Investigate production incidents, troubleshoot defects and performance issues, identify root causes, and improve system reliability.
• Participate in application design discussions, code reviews, technical documentation, and engineering standards.
• Contribute to application modernization, CI/CD pipelines, DevSecOps practices, automation, and continuous improvement.
• Use approved AI-assisted development tools while validating, securing, and testing generated code and recommendations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• 3–5+ years of application development or software engineering experience, including 3+ years with Java.
• Experience with Spring Boot or Spring Framework, RESTful APIs, microservices, relational databases, and SQL.
• Experience with Git-based source control and collaborative software development workflows.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot, or similar AI-assisted development tools.
• Experience with Agile delivery, DevSecOps, CI/CD automation, cloud technologies, and application modernization.
• Exposure to Azure or AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, SonarQube, SAST, DAST, or dependency scanning.
• Experience supporting enterprise applications in insurance, financial services, or healthcare.
