TL;DR
Engineer I, Mechanical (Nuclear) (Nuclear Reactor Design): Developing and analyzing mechanical systems, structures, and components for advanced nuclear reactors with an accent on structural design, thermal hydraulics, thermosystems, and mechanical design. Focus on performing hand calculations and engineering simulations, supporting prototyping and testing, and preparing design documentation for nuclear safety and licensing requirements.

Location: 4 days a week in office at 9801 Washingtonian Blvd, Gaithersburg, MD; the posting header also lists Rockville, MD. Travel up to 10% as needed. Working hours are 8:00am–5:00pm, Monday–Friday.

Salary: $75,000–$100,000 per year.

What you will do

  • Develop mechanical concepts, systems, structures, and components for nuclear products and facilities with a focus on nuclear safety.
  • Define design requirements, interfaces, design bases, criteria, industry codes, and standards with systems engineers and project leads.
  • Perform hand calculations and analytical assessments covering structural, thermal, hydraulic, thermodynamic, and other engineering requirements.
  • Support specialization in structural design, thermal hydraulics, thermosystems, mechanical design, or mechanical process equipment.
  • Develop, test, and verify analytical tools and models, including FEA, CFD, system simulations, and digital twins where applicable.
  • Prepare design documentation, technical reports, calculations, drawings, verification and validation plans, and support manufacturing, assembly, integration, testing, and commissioning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline such as nuclear, aerospace, or chemical engineering.
  • Zero years of engineering experience required; work is performed under guided supervision.
  • Proficiency with engineering hand calculations and knowledge of at least one relevant area: thermodynamics, mechanical design, structural analysis, thermal hydraulics, or mechanical process equipment.
  • Depending on specialization, experience with 1D flow solvers, CAD and PLM software, structural FEA, CFD codes, system-level simulation tools, or mechanical and fluid systems is required.
  • Mechanical design candidates need hands-on experience developing and delivering hardware or manufacturing processes, including internship, hobby, or collegiate engineering project experience.
  • Regular in-office work in Gaithersburg, Maryland is required four days per week.
