TL;DR
Mechanical Design Engineer (Fusion Energy) (Cryogenic and superconducting systems): Designing and delivering complex mechanical systems and assemblies for fusion energy and high-temperature superconducting technologies with an accent on CAD, engineering analysis, manufacturability, and safety. Focus on designing for high magnetic fields, cryogenic temperatures, vacuum and pressure systems, supporting validation and integration, and solving challenges involving thermal contraction and electromagnetic loading.

Location: Abingdon, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom; hybrid workplace

Salary: £50,000–£65,000 per year, dependent on skills and experience, plus benefits

What you will do

  • Create 3D CAD models and engineering drawings for complex mechanical systems and assemblies.
  • Perform engineering analysis, including FEA, calculations, and simulations.
  • Design components for performance, manufacturability, and safety in demanding operating environments.
  • Collaborate with engineers, physicists, suppliers, and other multidisciplinary stakeholders.
  • Support testing, validation, and system integration.
  • Produce clear technical documentation.

Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Strong CAD and mechanical design experience.
  • Experience with complex, high-performance engineering systems.
  • Ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Understanding of electromagnetic forces, cryogenic materials, thermal behaviour, and vacuum design principles.
  • Experience with safety-critical or highly regulated systems is strongly preferred.

Nice to have

  • Experience with superconducting magnet systems or high-field applications.
  • Experience in cryogenic engineering, vacuum systems, pressure-controlled environments, scientific instrumentation, aerospace, space systems, nuclear or fusion energy, high-power electrical systems, turbomachinery, or electromagnetic and high-current systems.
