TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer I (Nuclear) (3D CAD/Electromechanical Systems): Designing, building, testing, and commissioning mechanical hardware for factory-fabricated nuclear microreactors with an accent on CAD, fabrication, instrumentation, and manufacturability. Focus on integrating actuators and sensors, building test rigs, performing structural and thermal calculations, and validating mechanisms, seals, and fluid-system components.
Location: On-site in Austin, Texas; candidates must be based in the United States

What you will do
- Design mechanical components, mechanisms, and assemblies for advanced reactor technology under the direction of senior engineers.
- Create 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, bills of materials, interface documentation, tooling, fixtures, and inspection plans.
- Integrate actuators, drives, encoders, limit switches, sensors, and instrumentation into mechanical systems in collaboration with controls engineers.
- Perform hand calculations and structural, thermal, and mechanism analyses to size and justify designs.
- Build, instrument, and operate test rigs for mechanisms, seals, and fluid-system components.
- Work with machinists, welders, technicians, vendors, and operations to fabricate, assemble, test, and commission practical hardware.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- 1–3 years of hands-on engineering experience, including industry, internships, co-ops, or equivalent projects.
- Experience designing and building physical hardware and working with mechanical fabrication, assembly, or electromechanical testing.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD platforms such as SolidWorks, NX, Creo, or similar.
- Working knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, engineering drawings, basic schematics, and instrumentation wiring.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Person compliant with 10 CFR Part 810 and willing to work on-site in Austin, TX.
Nice to have
- Experience with actuators, motors, gearboxes, encoders, position sensors, linkages, latches, drives, or robotic equipment.
- Experience building custom test rigs, machines, or experimental setups.
- Experience with fluid, gas, or vacuum systems, including valves, seals, plumbing, or hydraulics.
- Familiarity with data acquisition systems, controls, PLC interfaces, welding, machining, or fabrication.
- Hands-on experience in Formula SAE, robotics, rocketry, hardware startups, or machine shops.
