TL;DR
Mechanical Design Intern (Nuclear Energy): Designing, analyzing, and testing mechanical components for Mark-1 and JANUS-1 fission microreactors with an accent on engineering drawings, test planning, manufacturability, and reliability. Focus on owning a defined component scope, resolving cross-functional hardware challenges, and delivering a long-duration engineering project with technical recommendations.

Location: On-site five days per week at the Torrance headquarters in the Los Angeles area, United States; remote and hybrid arrangements are not available. A relocation and housing stipend is included.

Salary: $34 per hour

What you will do

  • Support the design, analysis, development, and testing of mechanical components for Mark-1 and JANUS-1.
  • Own a defined component or project scope under the guidance of a Responsible Engineer.
  • Create engineering designs, analyses, drawings, test plans, and technical documentation.
  • Participate in design reviews and communicate technical decisions, assumptions, risks, and results.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and test teams to resolve technical challenges and improve performance, reliability, manufacturability, and testability.
  • Complete a long-duration engineering project and present the results and recommendations to the broader team.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Entering the junior or senior year of study.
  • Previous internship experience or more than one year of significant experience through a project team, laboratory, or research program.
  • Must work on-site five days per week at the Torrance facility.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain the required U.S. Department of State authorizations under U.S. export regulations.

Nice to have

  • GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • Experience with a university engineering club, competition team, research group, or technical organization.
  • Experience with mechanical CAD, engineering drawings, analysis, prototyping, or hardware testing.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, written, and technical communication skills.
