Mechanical Engineering Intern (Fusion)

Location: San Leandro, California; Fremont, California; or Los Lunas, New Mexico. Full-time onsite work is required for at least 12 consecutive weeks beginning between mid-May and mid-June 2027.

Salary: $30–$48 per hour, with the actual base salary determined by experience, skills, and work location.

What you will do

• Work on meaningful mechanical engineering projects across the target area engineering team.
• Own an engineering project through planning, design, assembly, and testing.
• Design, build, and test real fusion-system hardware and experimental systems.
• Contribute to high-priority efforts supporting the development of a commercial fusion system.

Requirements

• Be a junior or senior in a four-year Mechanical Engineering program.
• Have a strong foundation in mechanical engineering fundamentals and first principles.
• Communicate clearly and confidently in writing and verbally.
• Have working knowledge of stress analysis, including hand calculations and FEA, 2D drawings, and design for manufacturing and assembly.
• Have experience with 2D and 3D CAD tools such as Creo or SolidWorks.
• Be available for full-time onsite work for a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks beginning between mid-May and mid-June 2027.

Nice to have

• Hands-on mechanical design experience through coursework, clubs, research, or personal projects.
• Experience with conventional machining, shop tools, rapid prototyping, test stands, or experimental hardware.
• Experience defining system architectures, making design tradeoffs, and writing build instructions, procedures, or test plans.
• Experience with measurement, documentation, data analysis, kinematics, structures, or robotics.
• Experience with CAD, MATLAB, Python, or Excel, plus at least six months of internship, co-op, or substantial project experience.
