Principal Software Engineer (Machine Learning)

Location: Sunnyvale, California, United States; hybrid work with primary in-office presence.

Salary: $143,000–$286,000 per year, plus performance-based bonuses and possible stock compensation.

What you will do

• Lead the architecture, design, development, and maintenance of scalable backend and machine learning infrastructure.
• Guide and mentor engineers through code reviews, design discussions, technical direction, and hands-on development.
• Design complex distributed, microservice, and event-driven systems with strong performance, security, and scalability.
• Lead discovery and technical planning for major projects, aligning architecture with business goals, milestones, and requirements.
• Collaborate with Product Management, Data Science, Quality Assurance, and DevOps teams.
• Promote engineering standards, documentation, testing, continuous integration, operational excellence, and technical innovation.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant computer science or engineering field with required software engineering experience, or 7 years of software engineering experience.
• Advanced knowledge of software design, distributed systems, design patterns, data structures, and algorithms.
• Strong experience with microservices, event-driven architecture, backend development, and large-scale software products.
• Proficiency in Kafka and NoSQL databases, with coding experience in languages such as Java or Python.
• Experience with ML platforms, MLOps, feature stores, and context-aware real-time machine learning inference.
• Familiarity with Azure, Google Cloud Platform, CI/CD, production support, security, and software development lifecycle practices.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related area.
• Knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility practices.
