TL;DR
R&D Technician (Fusion Energy): Building and supporting magnet prototypes and R&D equipment for commercially viable fusion power plants with an accent on prototype production, process monitoring, equipment maintenance, and technical troubleshooting. Focus on developing manufacturing processes, solving mechanical and electrical assembly challenges, and maintaining safe operations around high voltage, strong magnets, and cryogenic systems.

Location: Devens, Massachusetts, United States; on-site. Second shift: Monday–Friday, 2:00–10:30 p.m. Occasional nights, weekends, on-call work, or travel may be required.

Salary: $30–$45 per hour plus 10% shift differential, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

  • Assist with building new products and magnet prototypes.
  • Prepare prototypes for internal and external evaluation and support product robustness.
  • Monitor processes, troubleshoot equipment and production issues, and implement solutions.
  • Set up, operate, troubleshoot, maintain, and perform preventive maintenance on R&D equipment.
  • Support new project installation, testing, specification development, and manufacturing process establishment.
  • Maintain accurate project records, provide technical assistance to QA, QC, engineering, and management, and recommend continuous improvements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, equivalency certificate, or higher.
  • At least 3 years of experience using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring tools.
  • 3–5 years of technical support experience or equivalent, including mechanical and electrical assembly, plumbing, vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, soldering, or wiring.
  • Ability to work on-site in Devens, Massachusetts, during the second shift.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and perform extended periods of standing, sitting, typing, or stooping.
  • Ability to work safely around heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, high voltage, and cryogenics.

Nice to have

  • Composites fabrication, prepreg layup, vacuum resin infusion, mold fabrication, epoxy potting, or injection molding experience.
  • Winding equipment, high-temperature superconducting materials, cryogenic chemicals, machine shop equipment, forklifts, or cranes.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and P&IDs, or experience with PLC and data analysis software.
  • Massachusetts 3A hoisting license.
  • Root cause analysis, problem-solving, planning, organization, and Microsoft Office skills.
