Senior Process Development Chemist (Energetic Materials)

Location: Fully onsite in Penrose, Colorado, with an expected move to Pueblo, Colorado within the next year. Travel up to 15%, including possible overnight travel to the Minden, Louisiana area.

Salary: $105,000–$165,000 USD base salary per year, with possible bonus eligibility.

What you will do

• Design and execute 100 g–10 kg bench-scale experiments covering reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, crystallization, impurity rejection, and pH or buffer control.
• Apply Design of Experiments to define operating windows, critical process parameters, and critical quality attributes.
• Assess reaction and thermal hazards, including heat of reaction, onset temperature, gas evolution, and thermal stability.
• Design experiments that account for changing mixing, heat transfer, and mass transfer during scale-up.
• Create documented process data packages for transfer to chemical engineering and production teams.
• Support safe laboratory operations, chemical inventory management, reagent and solvent selection, and waste minimization.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related physical science.
• At least 5 years of experience in process development, process chemistry, or process scale-up.
• Demonstrated proficiency with DoE and experience defining operating windows and factor interactions.
• Hands-on experience with crystallization, purification or separation processes, particle engineering, and reaction or thermal hazard assessment.
• Experience transferring processes from laboratory to pilot or production scale and authoring technical reports and data packages.
• Must be a U.S. Person under ITAR/EAR requirements and eligible to obtain required U.S. export authorizations. Must be eligible to obtain and maintain state and federal explosives licenses, pass drug, health, and background checks, and be at least 21 years old.

Nice to have

• Experience safely synthesizing, handling, and evaluating oxidizers and energetic materials.
• Experience with PAT tools, particle analyzers, electrochemical and spectroscopic analyzers, chromatography, IC, or GC.
