Senior Manager, Software Engineering (Backend)

Location: Plano, Texas; candidates must reside within a commutable distance of Plano.

What you will do

• Lead, hire, coach, and retain full-stack and backend engineering teams.
• Own backend architecture and technical direction, ensuring scalability, reliability, maintainability, and cost efficiency.
• Establish standards for API design, data modeling, testing, event-driven patterns, and serverless AWS architecture.
• Partner with Product, Design, and Front-End Engineering to deliver features from concept through production.
• Advance observability, security, CI/CD, deployment strategies, and cloud cost management.
• Monitor latency, error rates, availability, and other system metrics while remaining hands-on with code reviews and complex technical problems.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years in engineering management or a technical leadership role.
• Deep experience with serverless AWS architectures using Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB or Aurora Serverless, Step Functions, EventBridge, SQS, SNS, S3, and CloudFront.
• Strong proficiency in TypeScript and/or Python, with experience designing RESTful and GraphQL APIs.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code, observability, security, distributed-system testing, and containerized workloads.
• Must have the right to work in the United States and must not require current or future Toyota immigration support or visa sponsorship.

Nice to have

• Financial services, banking, or insurance industry experience.
• Multi-account AWS architecture, data streaming, GraphQL federation, CI/CD automation, or AWS certifications.
• Backend GenAI integration experience with Bedrock, SageMaker endpoints, or LLM orchestration patterns.
• Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
