Senior Software Engineer (Observability)

Location: Brisbane, QLD, Australia. Work options include office, home, or a combination of both, with campuses and co-working spaces across Australia.

What you will do

• Design, build, and continuously improve observability platforms, pipelines, and tooling used by Canva engineers.
• Optimize metrics and continuous profiling platforms through research, prototyping, and operational improvements.
• Improve querying, visualization, monitoring, alerting, and the overall user experience.
• Drive technical decisions and advocate for pragmatic observability solutions across teams.
• Champion observability best practices and guide engineers across the organization.
• Maintain metrics and profiling SDKs, data pipelines, and supporting infrastructure across the stack.

Requirements

• Proficiency coding in Python, Golang, and/or Java.
• Deep knowledge of computer engineering fundamentals and first principles.
• Experience with infrastructure as code, including Terraform and Jsonnet or equivalent tools.
• Practical experience with AWS services such as EC2, EKS, Lambda, SQS, Kinesis, S3, and MSK, or equivalent services.
• Experience with observability technologies such as Prometheus, Grafana, and OpenTelemetry.
• Experience with highly reliable, highly available, high-throughput distributed data pipelines and scalable databases.

Nice to have

• Deep OpenTelemetry experience.
• Experience operating metrics and monitoring infrastructure at large scale, including distributed Prometheus clusters or similar databases.
• Experience with Kinesis, Kafka, Kubernetes stateful workloads, data security, data obfuscation, and SLA/SLO practices.
