Principal Engineer, Storage Product Standards (NVMe)

Location: Daily onsite presence at the San Jose headquarters, United States, with 10% domestic travel.

Salary: $219,000–$351,000 USD annually, plus incentive opportunities.

What you will do

• Propose, draft, and review technical specifications within NVMe, NVMe-oF, OCP, and SNIA working groups.
• Lead and influence storage industry committees, boards, and vendor alliances while advocating for Samsung’s technical interests.
• Translate hyperscaler requirements from AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft, and Meta into product requirements for enterprise SSD controllers and firmware.
• Collaborate with cloud architects and Samsung R&D teams on storage architectures such as E1.S, E3, and Flexible Data Placement.
• Identify and protect proprietary storage innovations through patents during the standardization process.
• Create technical whitepapers, solution briefs, customer education materials, and competitive intelligence reports.

Requirements

• Daily onsite work in San Jose is required, with 10% domestic travel.
• Bachelor’s degree with 20+ years of experience, Master’s degree with 18+ years, or Ph.D. with 15+ years in a relevant technical field.
• 10+ years of direct storage-industry experience, including legacy HDD systems and modern NAND flash and SSD development.
• Proven influence, technical contribution, or committee leadership within storage standards bodies, consortiums, or vendor alliances.
• Deep knowledge of PCIe, NVMe, FDP, telemetry, SAS, SATA, SCSI, SNIA frameworks, SSD technologies, flash translation layers, and controller roadmaps.
• Exceptional written and verbal English communication skills at a highly fluent professional level are required.
