TL;DR
Staff Electrical Engineer (Fusion Energy): Designing and commissioning electrical hardware for next-generation R&D and processing equipment with an accent on 480VAC power distribution, electrical safety, signal integrity, sensor instrumentation, and control panel architecture. Focus on integrating high-power infrastructure with machine-level controls, mitigating EMI/EMC in high-magnetic-field environments, and bringing first-of-a-kind hardware into operation.

Location: Milpitas, California, United States. Workplace: On-site. Occasional travel, nights, weekends, and on-call work may be required.

Company

Develops next-generation fusion energy systems and associated R&D and processing equipment.

What you will do

  • Lead the electrical architecture for complex R&D tools, including 480VAC power distribution, low-voltage DC systems, cable harnesses, power conditioning, and safety systems.
  • Create, review, and approve electrical schematics, one-lines, I/O diagrams, panel layouts, cable schedules, and harness documentation in AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Specify and integrate power supplies, circuit protection, VFDs, servo drives, safety relays, sensors, and instrumentation.
  • Design grounding, shielding, isolation, interlocks, light curtains, emergency stops, and other systems for electrical safety and signal integrity.
  • Lead hands-on testing, ring-out, power-up, I/O checkout, commissioning, and fault isolation on the tool floor.
  • Support PLC and HMI configuration, industrial fieldbus integration, panel shop direction, component BOMs, contractors, and Factory Acceptance Testing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering; a master’s degree is preferred.
  • 10+ years of electrical engineering experience with power distribution, electrical cabinets, and hardware architectures for complex industrial or R&D capital equipment.
  • Expertise in AutoCAD Electrical, 480VAC three-phase systems, transformer sizing, SCCR, arc-flash safety, NFPA 79, NEC/NFPA 70, and UL 508A.
  • Experience resolving EMI/EMC, noise-coupling, grounding, and signal-integrity issues in complex electromechanical equipment.
  • Working knowledge of PLC architectures, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, safety PLCs, TwinSAFE, field wiring, and hands-on electrical troubleshooting.
  • Ability to work safely around high voltage, high current, heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, pressure systems, and cryogenics; ability to lift up to 25 lbs and perform standing, sitting, stooping, and climbing activities.

Nice to have

  • Experience with semiconductor tools, high-vacuum systems, or high-temperature processing equipment.
  • Experience with high-current DC power supplies, magnetics, or cryogenic instrumentation.
  • Ability to write and debug IEC 61131-3 Structured Text or Python for hardware testbeds.
  • Familiarity with Inductive Automation Ignition or custom SCADA/HMI interfaces.

Culture & Benefits

  • Competitive compensation with equity.
  • 13 company-wide holidays, flexible vacation days, and 10 sick days.
  • Generous parental leave and health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with employer matching and professional growth opportunities.
  • Team-building activities.
