Senior R&D Test Engineer - Fluid Systems (Thermofluids and fusion R&D): Designing, building, commissioning, and operating fluid systems for R&D test stands supporting magnet testing and SPARC and ARC projects with an accent on cryogenic, pressurized, vacuum, elevated-temperature, and molten-salt systems. Focus on system-level analysis, instrumentation and automation, vendor coordination, and solving complex integration and safety challenges across fluid, structural, and materials engineering.

What you will do
- Design fluid systems for R&D test stands supporting magnet testing and project test objectives.
- Analyze systems and components using hand calculations, system-level methods, ANSYS, and thermal and structural simulations.
- Specify, source, size, and integrate tanks, piping, pumps, valves, compressors, purification stages, circulators, and heat exchangers.
- Manage system builds and commissioning, coordinating engineers, technicians, vendors, and suppliers.
- Design instrumentation and automation for safe system operation.
- Collaborate across R&D, production, procurement, and SPARC teams while addressing structural and materials engineering risks.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, chemical, process engineering, or a closely related field.
- 7+ years of experience engineering integrated fluid and mechanical systems, including large-scale thermofluid systems.
- Experience with system requirements, process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, instrumentation integration, and troubleshooting.
- Experience with ANSYS, COMSOL, 1D compressible flow codes, Python, and MATLAB.
- Practical experience designing, building, and commissioning pressurized, cryogenic, vacuum, or elevated-temperature fluid systems.
- Ability to work on-site in Devens, Massachusetts, comply with U.S. export control laws, and occasionally work nights, weekends, or on-call shifts.

- Experience with both rapid small-scale R&D test stands and large-scale systems.
- Ability to contribute to structures or materials engineering and improve throughput during design, build, and commissioning activities.
