TL;DR
Firmware Engineer (Electrical) (Evergreen) (Avionics/FPGA): Designing and verifying safety-critical FPGA-based firmware for TCAS, transponder, and surveillance avionics systems with an accent on VHDL/Verilog development, requirements-based verification, and DO-254 compliance. Focus on developing certified aerospace hardware, preparing certification documentation, and solving complex integration challenges across hardware, RF, software, and systems engineering.

Location: On-site in Phoenix, Arizona or Grand Rapids, Michigan, United States. Travel up to 10% may be required.

What you will do

  • Design, develop, verify, and maintain FPGA-based firmware for TCAS, transponder, and surveillance avionics applications.
  • Develop RTL designs using VHDL and/or Verilog, and perform simulation, debugging, validation, and performance analysis.
  • Execute requirements-based verification and document results in accordance with program and certification requirements.
  • Apply DO-254 processes throughout the airborne electronic hardware development lifecycle.
  • Create hardware design and certification documentation, including requirements, design, configuration, and compliance artifacts.
  • Collaborate with hardware, systems, RF, software, quality, certification, program, and customer teams on design reviews and technical problem resolution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering with 4–9 years of relevant experience, or a graduate degree with at least 5 years of related experience.
  • Experience with FPGA and firmware design, systems engineering principles, requirements definition and verification, integration, testing, and technical documentation.
  • Hands-on experience designing and developing avionics products, RF systems, or sensor systems.
  • Experience with FPGA development using VHDL and/or Verilog.
  • Ability to work on-site in Phoenix, Arizona, or Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Nice to have

  • Experience with aerospace hardware/software systems, DO-254, DO-160, or DO-178.
  • Exposure to Model-Based Systems Engineering, RTOS integration, RF design, L-band systems, and RF FPGA principles.
  • Experience with design for cost, design for manufacturability, production support, or multi-program engineering.
  • Pilot License or Part 107 certificate.
  • Ability to lead and collaborate in multidisciplinary engineering teams with minimal oversight.
