TL;DR
Physician Coding Auditor (Medical Coding/Healthcare Revenue Cycle): Auditing inpatient and outpatient coding, developing training programs, and serving as a professional fee coding subject matter expert with an accent on coding quality, compliance, and education. Focus on evaluating coding accuracy, supporting denials and appeals, building training materials, and reporting compliance risks across multiple medical specialties.

Location: Remote nationwide within the United States; must reside in and be authorized to work in the United States. Travel to client, temporary, or corporate office locations may be required, including 20–40% travel to client sites.

Salary: $57,400–$99,000 annually, based on experience.

What you will do

  • Audit inpatient and outpatient accounts and conduct performance, randomized, and quality assurance reviews.
  • Assess educational needs and develop training programs, presentations, handbooks, coding aids, and other learning materials.
  • Support coding, edits, denials, appeals, and work holds as needed.
  • Train new and existing staff and help implement effective coding systems, processes, and procedures.
  • Coordinate professional seminars, webinars, audio conferences, and other educational activities while maintaining attendance records.
  • Report audit findings, quality issues, and compliance risks to coding management, leadership, coders, and relevant providers.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of coding experience and 3+ years of auditing experience.
  • Associate degree or equivalent experience.
  • At least one current professional certification: CPC, CCS-P, CCS, CPMA, RHIA, or RHIT.
  • Experience with multiple EMR systems, encoders, and Microsoft Office; knowledge of HIPAA regulations and medical/surgical terminology.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Must reside in and be authorized to work in the United States; willingness and ability to travel to and work onsite at client or office locations is required when business needs demand it.

Nice to have

  • Experience with professional fee coding in neurosurgery, interventional radiology, ENT, general surgery, cardiology, anesthesia, or emergency medicine.
  • Openness to using AI and emerging technology to improve processes and patient and client experiences.
