Outpatient Coding Consultant (Healthcare)

What you will do

• Review medical records and assign accurate diagnosis, procedure, discharge disposition, and APC codes.
• Sequence codes according to medical record documentation and abstract coded data for hospital statistical and reporting requirements.
• Identify documentation improvement opportunities and communicate coding issues to relevant personnel.
• Maintain 95% coding accuracy and 95% APC assignment accuracy while meeting site productivity standards.
• Communicate with coworkers, management, and hospital staff about clinical and reimbursement issues.
• Maintain professional coding credentials, complete continuing education, attend sponsored education sessions, and follow HIM policies and AHIMA ethics requirements.

Requirements

• AHIMA certification such as RHIA, RHIT, or CCS, or AAPC certification such as CPC, CPC-H, COC, CIC, or CRC.
• At least 2 years of coding experience in a hospital or coding consulting environment.
• Proficiency in outpatient coding specialties including same-day surgery, observation, injections and infusions, ancillary services, emergency department coding, and E/M leveling.
• Experience with computerized encoding and abstracting software.
• Strong written and verbal communication, time management, organization, teamwork, and remote-work skills.
• Successful completion of the annual introductory HIPAA examination and other assigned annual testing.
