TL;DR
Photonics Engineer (Quantum Sensing) (Quantum Sensing/Optical Systems): Developing and validating illumination and imaging systems for a widefield Quantum Diamond Microscope with an accent on experimental prototyping, optical simulation, and improving photon collection, sensitivity, and spatial resolution. Focus on solving optical bottlenecks, evaluating novel components and fabrication methods, troubleshooting complete quantum-sensing systems, and handing validated technologies over to product development.
Location: Munich, Germany
Company
is a TU Munich spin-off developing commercial quantum sensing tools for semiconductor inspection, chip debugging, and failure analysis.
What you will do
- Develop and experimentally validate illumination and imaging systems for a widefield Quantum Diamond Microscope.
- Investigate optical bottlenecks affecting photon collection efficiency, magnetic field sensitivity, and spatial resolution.
- Evaluate optical concepts through ray tracing, beam propagation, simulation, and feasibility analysis.
- Research optical components, coatings, micro-optics, and modern fabrication methods, turning concepts into physical prototypes.
- Run fast iterative experiments to de-risk technologies and generate rapid feedback.
- Document validated methods and findings and hand mature technologies over to the Product Development Team.
Requirements
- Degree in Photonics, Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, plus several years of relevant industry or research experience.
- Hands-on experience building, aligning, and characterizing optical laboratory setups.
- Systems-level understanding of illumination, optics, and physical sensor principles, including root-cause troubleshooting.
- Experience with optical system design and simulation, such as Zemax OpticStudio.
- Curiosity, exploratory problem-solving skills, and the ability to challenge conventional approaches.
- Strong communication and documentation skills in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
Nice to have
- Current knowledge of optical manufacturing technologies and emerging trends.
- Experience with widefield NV magnetometry or comparable fluorescence or confocal microscopy technologies.
Culture & Benefits
- Work on quantum sensing technology for semiconductor inspection and real industrial applications.
- Collaborate with physicists, engineers, and data scientists in an international team.
- Own technical topics end to end and contribute to a rapidly scaling deep-tech company.
- Company-sponsored Wellpass membership with access to fitness and wellness offers across Germany.
- 30 vacation days plus public holidays, an annual learning and development budget, team events, and off-sites.
