TL;DR
Thermal Design Engineer (Aerospace): Designing and developing thermal management systems for electric motors, electronic control units, and complete Electric Propulsion Units with an accent on thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and manufacturable cooling solutions. Focus on CFD and thermal simulations, validating models against real-world conditions, specifying cooling components, and guiding multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Location: Bicester, United Kingdom; hybrid/on-site work. Security clearance: must be clearable and may need to complete Baseline Personnel Security Standard checks.

What you will do

  • Own the thermal system design of electric propulsion products, including motors, power electronics, and complete Electric Propulsion Units.
  • Develop and optimise sealed liquid cooling systems, heat exchangers, pumps, coolant circuits, and airflow management.
  • Perform thermal and fluid-flow simulations using CFD and validate results against real-world operating conditions.
  • Specify cooling-system components and ensure designs support assembly, manufacturing, and volume production.
  • Support testing, validation, technical documentation, and product lifecycle activities.
  • Guide junior CAE engineers, designers, and systems engineers while working with suppliers and customers to resolve technical challenges.

Requirements

  • Senior-level experience, typically 5–15 years, delivering thermal design solutions for complex engineering products.
  • Strong knowledge of thermal engineering, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.
  • Experience with thermal systems, electric machines, rotating equipment, or electromechanical systems.
  • Experience with CFD and thermal analysis tools, including ANSYS Fluent or equivalent software.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent military experience.
  • Ability to solve complex engineering problems, communicate with stakeholders, and work independently in multidisciplinary teams.

Nice to have

  • Experience in electric propulsion, electrification, electric vehicles, aerospace, or advanced mobility.
  • Knowledge of electric motor cooling and power-electronics thermal management.
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, physical testing, and simulation correlation.
  • Understanding of Design for Manufacture and Design for Assembly principles.
  • Experience working with external suppliers and customers on technical development projects.
