Staff Engineer, Checkout Platform (m/f/d) (Java)

Location: Cologne, Germany; remote work is possible. Up to 20 work-from-home days per year can be taken anywhere in the EU.

What you will do

• Build and evolve the Core Commerce Services platform, from technical discovery and design through implementation and production.
• Define APIs, domain boundaries, integration patterns, and technical foundations for a secure and scalable headless checkout platform.
• Make pragmatic decisions around scalability, reliability, security, observability, and long-term maintainability.
• Align technical decisions and integration contracts across Checkout, Payment, and dependent engineering teams.
• Mentor engineers through pairing, design discussions, code reviews, and technical feedback.
• Partner with Product to establish foundations for AI-powered assistants, agentic commerce, and emerging channels.

Requirements

• Strong Java and backend engineering expertise, including backend services, platforms, and large-scale distributed systems.
• Staff/Principal-level experience or equivalent senior technical leadership, with strong system design, architecture, and technical ownership skills.
• Ability to work hands-on with production code and make autonomous technical decisions in a greenfield 0-to-1 environment.
• Experience shaping APIs and domain boundaries, evaluating trade-offs, and turning ambiguity into pragmatic solutions.
• Strong mentoring skills and the ability to lead through influence across engineering domains.

Nice to have

• Experience with headless or traditional checkout, order management, SaaS or platform engineering, e-commerce, or marketplaces.
