Staff Backend Engineer (Java)

Location: Bengaluru, India; hybrid work with at least 3 days per week in the office and up to 2 days from home

What you will do

• Serve as a technical lead on demanding cross-functional projects involving inventory and promise systems.
• Design architectures for new microservices and machine learning pipelines.
• Decompose complex technical problems into clear, scalable solutions.
• Build and improve systems with high performance, reliability, and enterprise distributed architecture requirements.
• Mentor engineers and support career development across the engineering community.
• Influence architecture and engineering practices across multiple teams.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience designing and operating high-scale distributed systems with strict latency and reliability requirements.
• Excellent hands-on coding ability in Java or a similar language for large-scale backend systems.
• Deep understanding of system design, including APIs, concurrency, data modeling, caching, messaging, gRPC, and REST.
• Experience with high-QPS production systems, large data volumes, Tier-1 SLAs, Kafka-based event-driven architectures, and multi-region systems.
• Experience with resilience engineering, including circuit breakers, retries, load testing, capacity planning, and graceful degradation.
• Demonstrated technical leadership through architecture direction, cross-team alignment, code reviews, and mentoring senior engineers.

Nice to have

• Experience in e-commerce, fulfillment, supply chain, logistics, inventory, order management, or planning systems.
• Experience with optimization systems, solvers such as CPLEX or OR-Tools, constraint programming, or production systems integrating data science.
• Experience using AI-assisted coding agents for development and code review.
• Experience with spec-driven development, OpenAPI, Protocol Buffers, API-first design, or contract-first development.
