Staff Engineer, Checkout Platform (Java)

Location: Berlin, Germany; remote work possible. Up to 20 work-from-home days per year may be taken anywhere in the EU.

What you will do

• Build and evolve scalable, channel-independent Core Commerce Services and headless checkout capabilities from technical discovery through production.
• Define APIs, domain boundaries, integration patterns, and technical foundations for scalability, reliability, security, observability, and maintainability.
• Align technical decisions and integration contracts across Checkout, Payment, and dependent engineering teams.
• Mentor engineers through pairing, design discussions, code reviews, and technical feedback.
• Partner with Product to establish foundations for AI-powered assistants, agentic commerce, and emerging sales channels.

Requirements

• Strong Java and backend engineering expertise, including production development of backend services, platforms, and large-scale distributed systems.
• Staff, Principal, or equivalent senior technical leadership experience with strong system design, architecture, and technical ownership skills.
• Experience shaping architecture, APIs, and domain boundaries in greenfield or 0-to-1 environments.
• Demonstrated ability to evaluate trade-offs, make pragmatic technical decisions, and work independently in ambiguous environments.
• Strong record of mentoring engineers and leading through influence across engineering domains.

Nice to have

• Experience with headless or traditional checkout, order management, SaaS or platform engineering, e-commerce, or marketplaces.
