Principal Optical/Laser Manufacturing Engineer (MEMS/Optics)

Salary: $175,000–$196,000 per year, depending on experience

The Billerica facility specializes in advanced photonics products based on MEMS and micro-scale optical devices, including laser-based Optical Coherence Tomography systems.

What you will do

• Serve as the technical authority for tunable laser module and optical engine manufacturing processes.
• Determine materials, equipment, tooling, layouts, workflows, assembly methods, and workforce requirements for manufacturing goals.
• Lead yield, performance, failure analysis, root cause, process control, SPC, and continuous improvement initiatives across product families.
• Develop work instructions and training programs, mentor engineers and direct labor personnel, and provide technical escalation support.
• Support new product transfers from R&D to manufacturing, including harmonization with released products.
• Lead concurrent projects, support capacity planning, and represent manufacturing engineering in cross-functional and leadership discussions.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Optical, or Laser Engineering; an advanced degree is preferred and may substitute for experience.
• 10+ years of manufacturing engineering experience.
• Strong knowledge of optics, OCT or swept-source lasers, MEMS devices, or optoelectronic device processing.
• Experience with design of experiments, characterization, data analysis, and process decision-making.
• Experience mentoring or leading engineers and cross-functional technical teams, with strong communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to work with electro-optical equipment such as optical spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, and power meters.

Nice to have

• Experience with VB.NET, LabVIEW, Power BI, or Six Sigma/Lean Manufacturing.
• Advanced degree in a relevant engineering field.
