TL;DR
Process Engineer (Optical Fabrication) (CNC/Optics): Developing and improving spherical optical fabrication processes on precision CNC generators, high-speed polishers, and centering machines with an accent on machining strategy, tooling design, process capability, and product performance. Focus on optimizing cycle times and toolpaths, solving equipment and quality issues, qualifying process changes, and applying SPC, DOE, and root-cause analysis to achieve production readiness.

Location: Wilton, CT, US; onsite work in an optics fabrication environment. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the USA and legally authorized to access controlled technology under US export regulations. Some travel may be required for global manufacturing and supplier interactions.

What you will do

  • Develop complex spherical optics using precision CNC generators, high-speed polishers, and centering machines.
  • Design machining strategies, tooling, workholding, toolpaths, and feeds and speeds to improve quality and throughput.
  • Analyze machining performance with SPC, capability studies, JMP, and Minitab, and define process specifications and control limits.
  • Diagnose tooling, fixturing, programming, equipment, repeatability, and reliability issues with maintenance and vendors.
  • Lead process trials and qualify new equipment, materials, and process changes from feasibility through production readiness.
  • Support root-cause analysis, corrective actions, 5S, and continuous improvement across CNC fabrication areas.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical, optical, materials, or related engineering.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in optical fabrication process engineering or a related manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience with CNC machining, polishing, surface inspection, optics metrology, and quality assurance.
  • Experience with root-cause analysis, lean manufacturing, DOE, Six Sigma, and data-driven problem solving.
  • Experience with NX, Mastercam, JMP, Minitab or equivalent tools, and SAP or MES systems.
  • Legal authorization to work in the USA and access controlled technology is required. Ability to work in manufacturing areas while wearing required PPE is also required.

Nice to have

  • Experience manufacturing spherical or plano optical elements.
  • Knowledge of cleanroom protocols and practices.
