TL;DR
Reliability Engineer (Nuclear): Developing quantitative reliability, availability, and capacity-factor models for the Antares R1 microreactor with an accent on fault analysis, statistical prediction, and mission-critical hardware performance. Focus on translating reactor-level targets into component requirements, analyzing failure mechanisms, designing qualification tests, and driving reliability improvements across mechanical, electrical, controls, and balance-of-plant systems.

Location: Torrance, California, United States; onsite at hirify.global' 145,000-square-foot facility

Salary: $140,000–$210,000 annually, plus equity

Company

hirify.global is a Series C clean-energy and advanced nuclear technology startup developing mass-producible, inherently safe microreactors for terrestrial, underwater, and space applications.

What you will do

  • Own quantitative reliability, availability, and capacity-factor analysis for the hirify.global R1 microreactor.
  • Translate plant-level performance goals into measurable reliability requirements for mechanical, electrical, controls, thermal, and balance-of-plant systems.
  • Develop reliability block diagrams, fault trees, FMEA/FMECA models, failure-rate estimates, and other quantitative reliability analyses.
  • Analyze failure modes, degradation mechanisms, component life, maintainability, repair strategies, and the major contributors to reactor downtime.
  • Define reliability demonstration and qualification test strategies, including sample sizes, test duration, failure criteria, confidence levels, and statistical acceptance methods.
  • Partner with engineering, manufacturing, testing, operations, and deployment teams to drive reliability growth plans and communicate risks to technical leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, applied mathematics, physics, statistics, or a related technical field.
  • Experience performing reliability engineering, root cause analysis, failure analysis, statistical analysis, or similar quantitative work on complex hardware systems.
  • Working knowledge of statistics, probability, failure modes, and reliability engineering fundamentals.
  • Ability to evaluate mechanical and electrical systems, likely failure mechanisms, technical data, and reliability risks.
  • Must be eligible under U.S. Government export regulations through U.S. citizenship or nationality, lawful permanent residence, refugee or asylee status, or the ability to obtain required authorizations.

Nice to have

  • Reliability engineering experience in nuclear, aerospace, space, automotive, energy, defense, or other safety- or mission-critical hardware industries.
  • Experience with reliability block diagrams, fault trees, FMEA/FMECA, Weibull analysis, MTBF/MTTR, probabilistic risk assessment, availability modeling, or reliability growth.
  • Knowledge of risk-informed component classification and 10 CFR 50.69.
  • Experience with mechanical and electrical design, manufacturing processes, qualification testing, materials, and hardware failure mechanisms.
  • Experience using Python, MATLAB, Octave, R, Minitab, SAS, NCSS, or similar tools for engineering and statistical analysis.

Culture & Benefits

  • Equity is included in the compensation package.
  • Work is centered on complex energy, defense, and space systems with an emphasis on probabilistic, systems-level thinking.
  • Teams prioritize in-person collaboration and direct engagement with customers, users, and stakeholders.
  • The role supports deep technical work across research, development, manufacturing, testing, and operational learning.
  • hirify.global is an equal opportunity employer.
