Composite M&P; Engineer I (Aerospace)

Location: Onsite at the manufacturing and test site in Briggs, Texas, north of Cedar Park. Travel to customers and other Firefly sites may be required up to 10% of the time.

What you will do

• Research and select composite materials and processes for structural aerospace applications.
• Evaluate nonmetallic materials, including carbon fiber composites, polymers, and adhesives, through microscopy, thermal analysis, mechanical testing, and other methods.
• Execute material characterization and allowable campaigns and maintain technical specifications for materials and processes.
• Support manufacturing and design teams with material selection, optimization, qualification, inspection, and product quality decisions.
• Perform material failure analysis, root cause corrective actions, and process-control improvements using test and NDE results.
• Provide technical support for critical needs and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Polymer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent engineering or science discipline.
• Experience in polymeric materials research, testing, or manufacturing.
• Technical understanding of composite processes, including out-of-autoclave manufacturing, composite and polymer joining, and surface engineering for aerospace applications.
• Experience coordinating laboratory work and analyzing data to support materials engineering decisions.
• Ability to build interdisciplinary relationships and work effectively in a team environment.
• Must meet U.S. Government ITAR eligibility requirements: U.S. citizenship, U.S. lawful permanent residence, protected individual status, or eligibility to obtain the required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice to have

• Advanced degree or equivalent experience focused on composite materials.
• At least one year of experience with carbon fiber composite materials, processes, testing, or manufacturing.
• Experience with carbon fiber prepreg systems, structural composite characterization, testing standards, and processing.
• Knowledge of mechanical, thermal, microscopy, NDE, failure-mode, and root-cause analysis, as well as technical writing.
• Experience applying ASTM, ASM, NASA, or ISO standards and relating process technologies to material behavior and product performance.
